Florida’s Vernon Hargreaves III has impressed a lot of scouts and draft experts throughout his collegiate career – consensus top 15 pick – though he hasn’t quite convinced his toughest competition that he’s a top defensive back prospect.
Ole Miss’s Laquon Treadwell, arguably the draft’s top wide receiver, seemed to have taken a clear shot at the Gator cornerback at his Combine press conference earlier in the week.
While Treadwell gave off somewhat of a cocky vibe throughout his time at the podium – “I wouldn’t consider anyone tough in college,” he said. “You have teams that had great players, but I just really never got a one-on-one matchup where I can say, ‘That guy stopped me’ or ‘That guy shut me down’ – Treadwell eventually got around to listing a few players he respected. He made it a point to leave Hargreaves III off the list.
“There were some great guys – Cyrus Jones, the guy from Florida, not Vernon Hargreaves, the younger guy (Jalen Tabor),” Treadwell said. “There were a lot of great cornerbacks, though.”
The stats don’t seem to support Treadwell’s assessment. In his one game against Florida, a 38-10 loss in Week 5, he had five receptions for 42 yards (second to his season low) while going up against Tabor and Hargreaves. Meanwhile, Hargreaves had a reception of his own when he picked off quarterback Chad Kelly in the fourth quarter.
Still, despite Treadwell’s light jab, Hargreaves had nothing but praise for the Ole Miss product.
“He can do everything,” Hargreaves said on Saturday, calling him his toughest competition. “He’s big, fast, strong, catches the ball in traffic – there’s not a lot you can do to get the ball off of him.”
Hargreaves didn’t take Treadwell’s comments to heart either, electing to take the high road instead.
“Hey, everyone is entitled to their own opinion,” Hargreaves said, during a candid and notable moment for GM’s measuring a player’s character.

Maybe that Treadwell wants to join the bucs also. I see a whole bunch of good drf linemen available ar no# 8 pick in Rd-2. So If Hardgraves is the pick then so be it.Go Bucs. But if Bucker is still there Tampa must take him and take a CB in Rd-2 and Safety in RD-3 Go Bucs
