Finding a franchise quarterback is certainly the most critical element for turning around an organization, but it’s not the only one – especially for a 2-14 team.
Even after trading for George Johnson, who’s productive, yet a rotational player, the Buccaneers still have glaring needs at the defensive end position. Same goes for offensive line, particularly along the right side where they currently have Patrick Omameh and Kevin Pamphile at the top of the depth chart.
But in the upcoming draft, Tampa Bay’s general manager Jason Licht believes there will be plenty of opportunity to address those areas, as the 2015 class fits the Bucs’ needs.
“It matches up pretty well,” Licht said during his press conference last Monday. “We’ve got… it’s a good [offensive line] draft, pretty deep O-line draft. It’s good on the defensive side. There’s some good defensive line depth there too. In terms of that, it matches up pretty well.”
To that point, however, Licht also says that they won’t trap themselves into drafting need over talent.
“But we also still keep our eye on that best available player, too,” Licht said. “Because at the end of the day, those are the guys you are glad you have, you’re glad you picked. So we are not going to pigeonhole ourselves into necessarily always just picking for need. But we are aware of what this team needs.”
It’s all but certain that the No. 1 overall selection will be spent on a quarterback. However, he won’t be the only rookie Tampa Bay relies on to start opening day against the Titans.
“We’re spending just as much time right now on pick 34, 65, 109 and so forth,” Licht said.

If the players all fall to us, I would love the Bucs to go QB, OT/OG, then OG/OT with the first three picks. Dream senario would be #1- J. Winston, #2 – A.J. Cann or L. Tomlinson and #3 – C. Ogbuehi or T. Sambrailo. Then, just fill in with BPA. We obviously need DE, slot WR, S, nickel CB, RB and LB.
