Charlie Campbell is a good reporter. Those “reporters” at ESPN can learn from him (and can learn from PR, of course). I am very excited about the future of this team!

I do not believe the Glazers would get behind a player who was going to be the face of the franchise if they haven’t fully investigated his off-the-field issues.
That said, while I have touted Mariotta because of those issues, if they chose Winston, I will be excited about the direction our franchise is headed in.
In short I trust the Glazers will spend THEIR money wisely.

I agree… I’ve come to value CC’s reporting. When he called for that brutal ’13 season I was down on him, but ÷÷÷÷ if he didn’t nail it. He’s close behind PR in terms of credibility reporting on the Bucs.

  4. 4

Well if that’s true that obviously changes everything from my point of view on who the pick will be because my entire basis for who the Bucs will draft is based on my belief that the Glazers don’t want Winston when there is a perfectly good Mariota available with production and without issues. We’ll see if the tune changes as they go through the rest of the evaluation process. This doesn’t change anything I’ve said about who I think is the better long term QB (Mariota) but that’s not the point of this article.

  5. 5

If the Glazers feel fine about Winston then all Buc fans should get behind this pick. It is about time we take a home run swing at a QB that this franchise has needed for a long time. This is a QB driven league, we can get the extra pieces we need this year and next. To have a QB that can carry a team and win the close games will make the Bucs a contender for years to come. This is shaping up to be a great year for the Bucs with a fairly easy schedule and a new QB.

  6. 6

This does not surprise me. His freshmen season he was hands down the best Q.B. since Luck. This year he took a step back with his interceptions. I think that was more on losing some key weapons like Benj, to the NFL. Still managed to go undefeated on the season. Off field it’s the same story. Crab legs, cursing, BB gun shooting, sex allegation. He stayed clean all of the 2014 season off the field. The kid’s a winner, and that’s what the Bucs need at quarterback.

Winston got suspended for the Clemson game. That was in 2014.

I hope we give Jameis the playbook at the Combine so he can start learning the offense. Im convinced all Mariota supporters will be won over after Jameis’ first comeback drive late in the 4th while Mariota does his best Jake Locker impersonation.

    1. 7.1

Locker looked like crap in college and always had a low completion percentage. I don’t think it was ever over 61% if memory serves me correctly. He was top high school recruit and got by on reputation. Mariota was a fantastic college QB. The NFL expectations for Winston when he won’t have his college HC, O-line, RB and receivers is staggering to me. The whole FSU team made comebacks not just Winston. Give the team the credit it’s due, not just the guy under center.

      1. 7.1.1

true…but that’s never said about other great QBs like Marino, Elway, Brady, Manny that had a knack for engineering game winning drives & come from behind victories…if that was the case plenty of QB would have a bunch of game winning drives under their belts but most don’t…it really takes a specially kind of talent along with a good team

      2. 7.1.2

Oregon proved that their team was better when they beat Florida St this year so that’s not a valid argument. If Jameis can go undefeated in games decided by 7 or less then wouldn’t that make Mariota’s 2-3 mark in similar games look even worse? Mariota confirmed all my doubts in his game against Ohio State. Can he consistently fit balls into tight windows, answer was no. Can he win from the pocket when he can’t consistently get the edge running, answer was no. Without his receivers streaking wide open he wasn’t the difference maker a number 1 overall pick should’ve been. I could be wrong but I’ll stick with history and the pocket passers that typically have success bc the athletes usually fizzle out at QB.

Stlbucsfan, I disagree with your assessment of the Ohio state game. He fit more balls into tight windows than he had all year. Just because he didn’t win the game doesn’t mean he played poorly. His receivers dropped a lot of well placed balls. Ohio State dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball which to me is more on the HC for not having the team ready. Using terms like “winner” and “difference maker” are qualitative terms that can’t be measured. Either Mariota made the right read and made an accurate throw or he didn’t, the rest is up to the receiver. Mariota played much better against Ohio State than he did against FSU and he did it throwing from the pocket because Ohio State took away the run. The number of errant throws Mariota made were no more than any other QB. Every QB misses a few times a game. Even with all of that, that was one game. Again, I saw 9 games of his this year and 5 last year. You have to judge him on the whole body of work.

His whole body of work suggests hes an above average system quarterback. You can go through the Chip Kelly era at Oregon and find plenty of QBs with gaudy stats. The problem is what they do doesnt translate to the NFL unless you are willing to run that system. He fit more balls into tight windows and by more it was 5-6 compared to his usual 1 or 2. His team was plus 4 in turnover margin, he had plenty of opprotunities to rally his team but couldnt make the plays necessary. Looking at the current state of the Bucs I want a QB that can overcome some pressure in the pocket and a few balls being dropped bc lets be honest he will experience that here. Give me the guy that shows up in winnable games and not the one with glimpses here and there of real quarterbacking.

Well buc fans here is my 2 cents. I think Tampa may get 2 qb’s in this year draft. NO#1 get Jameis Winston with pick no#1. get a OT or OG with 2 rd pick. Trade Mike Glenn for a 3rd Rd Pick. With two picks in Rd-3 Get the two best Defensive players available left in the draft. Get another young QB in the late rounds. May be a surprise from the combines. I’d think we should land the cowboys rb who the cowboys could not match Tampa $$$. Then Trade Martin if Tampa gets Murray. Looked out Offensive will thrive. I think Tampa has a chance to do something right. DO”T TRAde down GET THE PLAYERS THAT WILL FIT IN LOVELY SMITH PLAN. I’d hope that Tampa could get back to the playoffs. Out Division is worst in the league. Tampa can win it in 2015-2016 GO BUCS. First thing first GET WINSTON first Then build the offense around him.George L Hicks HB PLANT class of 1964.

No way the Bucs draft 2 QBs. That would be the stupidest idea since Washington did it. Tampa needs to put its money into the OL and DL not a RB.

  9. 9

I’ll go with either QB because I’m okay with either; I just think Winston is the better QB.
I would like to discuss more about that 34th spot as they have to have a starter out of this one from the get go. I hope it is an OL; for me it’s the priority after QB.

    1. 9.1

Yes;QB, OL, DE, MLB. Same for FA except QB.

  10. 10

Although I have no faith in Licht or Lovie making personal decision (based on last year), I do trust Koetter making the correct decision on the QB. Although, I would be shocked if Tampa does not pick a QB, I would not be upset if they didn’t if that is what Koetter decides.

  11. 11

How will Winston hold up when he is getting beaten like a rag doll behind our OL, and we lose half our games? Sterling, I’m sure. Not. Would still rather go Foles-Glennon-3 OL draft picks. At least if we go with Winston and it doesn’t work, we get rid of L&L. But, if the Glazers are wrong about this, too, when do we get to fire them?

  12. 12

Is it just me or does Winston’s release and footwork remind anyone else of Byron Leftwich?

    1. 12.1

I’ve read this comparison in a few articles. One of many reasons I’m not anxious to have Winston.

I’m also not keeen on trading down. Even though St. Louis got a great deal of picks for RGIII. Yeah, they now have some great players, but they still sit in the basement of their division. Those picks did not propel them into the playoffs. True, they’ve had QB problems. That just emphasizes the importance of a quality QB for the majority of teams to be successful.

    2. 12.2

A little. Has the windup but a quicker release.

  13. 13

    1: Winston / 2: Perryman. Let’s get to 8-8 next year.

  14. 14

Owners should be Owners and leave the Football operations to the Professional GM and coaches they hire. The Glazers know squat about football. They are businessmen. If they want to sell tickets then select Winston. If they want to win another Super Bowl they should take Mariota.

    1. 14.1

I have tickets, but I would still prefer Mariota. I’m willing to sit through a development year. With Winston, I’ll be afraid to pick up the Tampa Bay Times each morning.

  15. 15

Be there Saturday morning, Rappaport just confirmed, Jameis is going to throw!

  16. 16

The Glazers would no doubt refrain from directing Lycht to draft a particular player and they would make it clear that they will support their decision. It’s all about hope. Draft Winston and hope he matures like most of us do or draft Mariota and hope he can be a NFL QB.

    1. 16.1

The perception that Mariota can’t be an NFL qb is hilarious I guess we all pretend to be Mike Moyock during this time of yr, so Winston is a 100% guarntee of a pick eh? Hmmm, yeah I wish it was that easy, Winston has a big arm and Mariota relies on athleticism and this means what? Steve Young, Russel Wilson, Jeff Garcia, Colin Kaepernick, Randal Cunningham, Can Newton etc etc are guys who rely on athleticism to make plays. This stereotype that you have to be a pocket passer is still around with some people I guess

      1. 16.1.1

Just repeating the question many “experts” have posed about Mariota JonnyG. This isn’t a comparison about the benefit of arm strength vs running ability. To me, when judging QB’s, it’s all about the passing. I’ve never made a statement that Mariota “can’t” be a NFL QB like some who believe Winston “can’t” mature.

  17. 17

If the Bucs make the mistake and Draft Winston I will have to look long and hard if I can continue my support. After reading the NY Times article there is no doubt in my mind he committed sexual assualt. I think most of the intelligent non FSU homers are smart enough to see it also.

    1. 17.1

What worries me about Winston throwing aside the sexual asualt allegation is his decision making like stealing in a city where he is the most recognized person in Tallahassee, cursing at the student union than lying to his coach about it, bb gun shooting around campus, stealing soda at a Burger King, these are very imature decisions from someone who lacks maturity and integrity, this has me terrified in drafting him. Scubog and Scott Reynolds said “this is just part of being young as they did the same when they were in college” what they feel to realize is they weren’t in the spot light or a heisman qb of a national chamionship team where you are upheld to a high standard than just the normal collegiate student partying, but no matter what you say there will be people who will say “boys will be boys” and these are the parents who have children suspended from school and getting arrested, I don’t make excuses for my child and I hold him accountable for his actions I just wish more parents would do the same

      1. 17.1.1

I never said I did any of those things. In fact, I was more like Mariota. Never did drugs, don’t drink, don’t smoke, never been arrested, graduated with honors. Not everyone can make that statement. I just think those issues are more about immature behavior than bad character. I’ll bet there are a lot of people who have great careers now who did similar things while an idiot frat brother.

Again, your missing my point-the difference is those lawyers now weren in the spot light or a heisman qb of a national chamionship team where you are upheld to a high standard than just the normal collegiate student partying,

Neither guy are great QB’s; B grade at most. I’ll take Winston and keep my fingers crossed. He’s our best hope to get to a Superbowl in a few years. I see little hope in Mariota getting us to the playoffs in a few years. I really would prefer to trade down and deal with QB’s next year in the draft, but I know that’s not going to happen.

  19. 19

Love to watch Winston play, but I’m very worried about making him a multi millionaire and the face of this team, I know I’m biased because of the last #5 franchise QB we had, and he came into the league without any off the field issues. I see Jameis getting into more trouble than Josh ever did when he goes into the Tampa nightlife looking to spend all that $$. Marriot a isn’t perfect but he’s dang good, has a ton of upside, is a tireless worker and a model team player. We’re starring at a Manning/Leaf decision and I’m afraid we’re going to blow it.

  20. 20

Doesn’t matter who the BUCs pick at QB. I will back whoever the QB will be. It’s about time the BUCs get a true Franchise QB!
