The Mike Alstott Family Foundation on Monday held a summer bowling party at Seminole Lanes for “Camp Redbird” participants as well as athletes from Special Olympics Pinellas County.
Camp Redbird is a summer camp for people with disabilities, and is separated into three programs for youth, teen and adult members. It’s a division of the City of St. Petersburg’s Therapeutic Recreation program, whose education and recreation services help people with illness, disabilities and other conditions. The Camp’s goal, as written in the media releases for the event, is to help participants “use their leisure in ways that will enhance their health, functional abilities, independence and quality of life.”
The event, led by former Bucs great Mike and his wife, Nicole, included a pizza lunch and ice cream dessert, followed by a recognition ceremony for the participants. Each participant also received a Mike Alstott Family Foundation event t-shirt and custom participation medal.
“Seeing so many smiling faces year after year is what really makes this one of my whole family’s favorite events,” Alstott said. ”The participants are so appreciative and welcome our family with open arms. I think we’re as excited, if not more, to see them as they are to see us.”
As written in the press release, “the Mike Alstott Family Foundation was formed to allow the Alstotts to assist others in uplifting the minds, hearts and spirits of families and children on their way to realizing their full potential through various events, assistance programs and celebrations.”
A fan favorite on the field and all-time great Buccaneer, Mike Alstott is still making his presence felt in the Tampa Bay community. For more information about the Mike Alstott Foundation, visit www.mikealstottfamilyfoundation.org
